Sewell wins first tournament, Kats take team title

Leading by four shots heading into Wednesday's final round, Chad Sewell left no doubt about the individual medalist honors at the Bentwater Intercollegiate. The senior from Conroe shot a second consecutive round of 65 to win by 11 shots.Â

Sewell's 14-under for the tournament helped the Bearkats to a second team title of the season, winning by 20 shots over Rice. The Bearkats were 5-under for the tournament after a 5-under 279 on Wednesday.Â

For the second consecutive round, Sewell started his day off with an eagle and followed with a birdie. Over the three rounds, he played the first three holes at 7-under par and recorded just three total bogey's in 54 holes played.

Sewell was one of four Bearkats who finished in the top 10, including two who were playing as individuals. Grayson Blunt Shot a 72 on Wednesday to finish in a tie for 10th. Blunt started his day with a birdie and then picked up birdies on Nos, 14 and 15 to get back to 1-over for the round.Â

Gene Chaikangwal was 1-under for the tournament and finished in a tie for 5th. The freshman, who was playing as an individual, was playing in his first tournament as a collegiate golfer. Another freshman, Josh German, who was also playing as an individual, shot a 69 and finished the tournament tied for 10th.

Freshman Bret Gray recorded his second top 20 finish of the season, taking 19th after shooting an even-par round of 71 to close out the tournament at 4-over. Jack Randle also had an even par round on Wednesday and finished tied for 39th. Ting-Wei Hsieh finished tied for 21st after shooting a 1-over round of 72.

Tristan Renaud, playing as an individual, closed his day with three birdies in his final six holes to shoot a 74 and finish in a tie for 28th.

The tournament wraps up the fall slate for the Bearkats, who finished with two wins and a runner up in their four events to start the season. They will be back in action on Feb. 14 at the Border Olympics in Laredo.
