Soccer adds 5 on signing day

HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston soccer team has signed five recruits for the 2022 season, head coach Tom Brown announced Wednesday.

The new student-athletes are Kassidy Baehren, a goalkeeper from Cypress, Kamryn Baquero, a defender from Montgomery, Kennedy Baquero, a midfielder from Montgomery, Kinsey Hill, forward/midfielder from Midland, and Pam Murray, a midfielder from Cypress.

Baehren is a four-year varsity player for head coach Kaitlyn Bourgeois at Bridgeland High School. She was honorable mention all-district as a freshman, all-state as a sophomore and junior and Bridgeland made the bi-district finals her freshman and junior seasons. She plays club for the Challenge 04 ENCL and is ranked in the top 4 percent of her class, is a member of the National Honor Society and a Member of Mu Alpha Theta.

"I am thrilled to become a part of the SHSU soccer family, since my older sister (Katarina) is already part of the program," Baehren said. "We will get to play together for the first time ever. I have loved SHSU from my very first ID camp in eighth grade. Also, SHSU's College of Education has a fantastic reputation for preparing young teachers to be future leaders in public education. I want to carry on the 'family business' and become an educator like both of my parents."

What Coach Brown said about Baehren:
"We are excited to add Kassidy to our team," Brown said. "She has gained very good club soccer and high school experience and will strengthen our goalkeeping position. She has shown herself to be a leader and that is very important trait for goalkeepers."

Kamryn Baquero plays club for the Houston Dash. She is a dual citizen of the United States and Equador, 2018 ECNL PDP, 2021 GA ID, 2019 and 2020 Distinguished Honor Roll, 2020 Most Outstanding Homeroom Student, 2017 ECNL National Qualifier and was a 2021 nominee for the Congress of Future Medical Leaders Award of Excellence.

"I chose Sam Houston State because I wanted to be in a smaller environment that is also close to my family," Baquero said. "I wanted to become part of a program where I liked all aspects of what they had to offer and have the opportunity to grow."

What Coach Brown said about Kamryn Baquero:
"Kamryn is a very versatile player who can play wide in the defense or the back of the midfield," Brown said. "She is very calm under pressure and is great at connecting the ball from the back to the front."

Kennedy Baquero plays club for the Houston Dash along with her sister. She also is a dual citizen of the United States and Equador, 2018 ECNL PDP, 2021 GA ID, 2019 and 2020 Distinguished Honor Roll, 2020 Most Outstanding Homeroom Student, 2017 ECNL National Qualifier and was a 2021 nominee for the Congress of Future Medical Leaders Award of Excellence.

"I chose to come to Sam Houston because I wanted to go to a school that was small and closer to home," Baquero said. "My sister and I love spending time with our family, so I didn't want to go far. I also wanted a program that pushed their players to become better versions of themselves. Sam Houston for me is home and I can't wait to start my journey here."

What Coach Brown said about Kennedy Baquero:
"Kennedy is a technical player who can help the team keep possession of the ball," Brown said. "She has great vision on the field and understanding of the game."

Kinsey Hill is a four-year varsity player for head coach Rafael Gonzalez at Midland High School. She was the 2019 Newcomer of the Year and was the District 2-6A Midfielder of the Year in 2020 and was first-team all-district as a junior in 2021. She played club for FC Dallas WTX 03 and String Royal ECNL and is currently ranked second in her class and a member of the National Honor Society.

"I chose Sam Houston State because I absolutely love the beautiful campus, the wonderful coaches, and the loving team and soccer program," Hill said.

What Coach Brown said about Kinsey Hill:
"Kinsey is a dynamic and explosive player who can get forward and score goals," Brown said. "She is terrific at combining with her teammates and getting onto the attack."

Pam Murray is a four-year varsity player at Cypress Ranch High School. She has earned first-team all-district honors, honorable mention all-region and was the District 14-6A Midfielder of the Year. She played club for the Albion Hurricanes 04 ECNL.

"I chose to come to Sam Houston State University because of the family-like atmosphere and team and I plan on majoring in criminal justice," Hill said.

What Coach Brown said about Pam Murray:
"Pam is a very skillful midfielder," Murray said. "She has the ability to find the most dangerous areas to play the ball and gets her team going forward to score goals."
