HOUSTON – The Bearkats took second place and Denise Blankenzee was named tournament MVP at the 11th TRACK Kat Klash on Sunday.
The No. 6 ranked Bearkats continued their hot start to the season, posting a 12-1 record over the three-day event. They opened bracket play on Sunday with wins over nationally ranked No. 9 Louisiana Tech and No. 5 North Carolina A&T before falling to No. 1 Nebraska in the finals.
"Amazing weekend overall and it never hurts to depart an event with double digit wins," said head coach Brad Hagen. "We're growing as a team and getting stronger by the event and that all I can ask for."
The Kats opened the day with a sweep of La Tech to advance to the semifinals. They topped 200 in all four games, including a high game of 258. Against NCA&T it was more of the same. They Kats once again took the first four games, bowling over 200 each time.
In the finals The Kats went back and forth with the top ranked Cornhuskers, taking games 1, 3 and 5 to take a 3-2 lead in the match. Nebraska took games 6 and 7 to close out the match.
Blankenzee was the top scorer for the weekend, bowling a 241 average to earn MVP honors. Her average was 16 pins better than anyone else in the field.
Bea Hernandez was also named to the All-Tournament team with a 214 average to finish in fifth overall.
"Maybe the best thing about this weekend, was we got contributions from everyone on the squad," Hagen said. "I think we have as much depth on this team as we've ever had. Anyone can step up and perform for us right now, and to have that happen this early in the season is a positive sign."
This tournament wraps up the fall portion of the schedule for the Bearkats. They will be back in action on Jan. 21, for the North East Classic in Deptford, New Jersey.
