Kats wrap up series sweep in Abilene

ABILENE — Sam Houston continued its hot streak at the plate to knock off Abilene Christian 9-4 Saturday at Poly Wells Field.

After combining for 31 hits and 22 runs in a pair of wins Friday, the Bearkats blasted three home runs and three doubles to complete the Southland Conference series sweep of the Wildcats. Sam Houston now stands 8-7 in league play and 11-21 overall.

ACU (7-27, 3-12 SLC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Kats took control of the game in the third.

Junior Sheridan Fisher, freshman Ellie Grill and senior Megan McDonald all singled, then sophomore Kyndal Kutac picked up where she left off Friday with a three-run double to left-center field to give Sam Houston a 3-2 lead. Senior Brooke Malia followed with a two-run blast, her third of the season.

Kutac went 6 for 13 in the series with 10 RBIs, a home run and two doubles.

Fisher drove in a run with a groundout in the fourth, and freshman Kylie Hobbs hit a solo home run and freshman Hannah Scheaffer added a two-run inside the park homer in the fifth to push the lead to 9-3.

Freshman Mika Vento gave up three runs in four innings with three strikeouts to earn the win and improve to 5-5 in the circle this season.
