KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The bowling season came to an end on Thursday evening, as the Sam Houston Bearkats fell to Youngstown State in the regional finals.
After fighting off elimination on Thursday morning, eliminating the No. 5 seed Fairleigh Dickenson, the 12th-seeded Kats were pushed to a third set against the Penguins. After taking a 2-1 lead in the best-of-7 match, the Kats dropped three straight games to lose in 6.
"I'm proud of the way the girls continued to fight today just to get us in a position to advance," said head coach Brad Hagen. "We made some big shots, especially early in the day and all I asked was for them to give us a chance to move on, and that's what they did."
In the regional final against No. 13 Youngstown, the Bearkats took the traditional game to take the early lead in the match. In the baker round, they had opportunities to close out the match, but couldn't take advantage to force a best-of-7 round.
In the best-of-7, Sam Houston won two of the first three games to take the lead in the set, but Youngstown State answered back to take the next three, including a 1-pin win in game 6.
In the morning match against FDU, the Bearkats dropped the opening set, losing the traditional round by 35 pins. Elise Chambers led the way for the Kats, bowling a 267.
After getting down early in the baker round, thee Kats charged back. They immediately wiped out a 31 pin deficit in the first game, winning by 98 pins. In the best-of-7 round, the Kats once again got down early before coming back. FDU took games 1 and 3 to take a 2-1 advantage in the set. After a 3-pin win in game 4, the Bearkats followed with wins in games 5 and 6 to take the match.
"Elise was big for us there," Hagen said. "We moved her to the anchor spot for the first time and she handled it great. She didn't let the moment get too big for her."
