Bearkats sit in 7th after 2 day at NCAA Championship

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Grayhawk Golf Club showed it's teeth on Saturday's second round of the NCAA Golf Championship. The Sam Houston Bearkats who fired a 278 on Monday, shot a 12-over 292 on Saturday and stand in seventh place.

The Kats are 10-over for the tournament after 36 holes of play on a course that has just two teams, Oklahoma State -6 and Oklahoma -1, playing under par for the tournament. There were only five team which were under par for the day, all playing during the morning pairings.Â

The Kats will tee off on Sunday at 9:05 a.m. and will be playing with Clemson and Wake Forest, who are both a stroke behind the Bearkats at 11-over.Â

Luis Carrera had the low round of the day for the Bearkats, shooting an even par 70. He started his day with a birdie on No. 1, one of three in the round for the sophomore from Mexico City.Â

Hole 1 played as the third-most difficult hole on the course, with just 12 birdies on the day and an average score of 4.53 on the 430 yard par 4. He is one of two Bearkats under par for the tournament, sitting in 11th place at 1-under.

William Holcomb is the overall leader for the Bearkats, shooting a 71 on Saturday. He is 2-under for the tournament and sits in 7th. Holcomb got off to a slow start, with bogeys on three of his first six holes to go 3-over for the round.Â

But he started to turn things around on No. 7 with a birdie, one of nine on the day at that hole. After a bogey at 11, he then birdied, 13, 14 and 17 before a bogey on 18 to close out the round.Â

Finals play consists of three days of stroke play on Friday thru Sunday (54 holes), after which the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on an advancing team will be determined.Â

That is followed by a final day of 18 holes of stroke play on Monday, May 31 to determine the top eight teams that will advance to match play as well as the 72-hole individual champion. The team national champion will be determined by a match-play format that will consist of quarterfinals and semifinals conducted on Tuesday, June 1, followed by finals on Wednesday, June 2.
