8/13/2021 8:27:00 AM | Men's Golf
Sophomore golfer Grayson Blunt is through to the round of 16 at the 121st U.S. Amateur after a thrilling victory on Friday morning.Â
Â
Blunt, who was tied with Joe Highsmith heading to the 18th hole of match play, sank a par putt to win the match.Â
Â
Blunt's victory continues what has been a historic season for the men's golf program. The Kats had a record three golfers competing in this year's top amateur event, with two, Blunt and William Holcomb, advancing to the round of 32.
Â
Holcomb lost a hard-fought match on Friday morning, pushing all the way to the 21st hole before falling to Devon Bling.
Â
For Blunt, playing in his first US Amateur, is the second Bearkat to make the round of 16, after Holcomb advanced to the semifinals in 2019.Â
Â
Blunt and Highsmith were tied after 10 holes before Blunt won back to back holes on Nos. 11 and 12, eagling the 667 yard, Par 5 hole. Highsmith got one back on No. 14 and then tied the match with an eagle on No. 17.Â
Â
Blunt's par on No. 18 sends him to a round of 16 match up against the No. 5 seed Brian Stark.Â
Â
Television coverage of the US Amateur begins at 10 a.m. on Peacock and then 11 a.m. on the Golf Channel. Â
