BEAUMONT — The Sam Houston tennis team competed at the Joe Pyburn Tournament hosted by Lamar over the weekend at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Courts.
 
The tournament featured two singles flights and one doubles with players from SHSU, Lamar and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
 
In flight A singles, Lusine Chobanyan placed fifth with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Lamar's Ana Jolic. She lost her opening match to the Islanders' Cami Townsend 6-3, 6-3.
 
Sahithi Vutukuru fell to Bianca Vitale 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round, lost a close match to Jolic in the consolation bracket 7-5, 7-6 (7) and dropped the seventh-place match to Elena Rodriguez of Lamar 6-3, 6-1.
 
In flight B singles, Isidora Zivkovic advanced to the fifth-place match where she fell to Noelia Lorca 7-5, 6-4. Zivkovic lost her opening match 6-4, 6-4 to Emma Honore of TAMU-CC then bounced back to top Elena Rubio of Lamar 6-0, 6-0.
 
Petra Kaszas lost her only match of the tournament to Rubio 3-6, 6-2, 10-8.
 
In doubles play, Chobanyan and Kaszas defeated Alba Perez and Jolic 6-1, and Zivkovic and Vutukuru fell to Kataryna Rublevska and Jordan Ortega of TAMU-CC 6-3.
