EDINBURG — Sam Houston picked up its first league win as a member of the Western Athletic Conference with a 1-0 victory over UTRGV on Thursday night.

The Bearkats (3-6 overall) snapped a four-game skid to pull even in conference play at 1-1 and hand head coach Tom Brown his 100th victory at Sam Houston .

The Vaqueros fell to 5-7-1 overall and 1-2 in league action.

Caitlyn McDonald put the Bearkats on top in the 25^th minute. There was a scrum for the ball in the top middle of the box following a corner kick, and McDonald scored her first goal of the season with a hard grounder through defenders and to the right of the diving goalkeeper.

It was the first goal Sam Houston had scored since Alexis Truitt's game winner against McNeese on Aug. 29.

Tatum Krueger played all 90 minutes in goal for the Kats. She finished with six saves, three in each half.

Landri Townsend led Sam Houston with three shots on goal. Truitt accounted for the Bearkats' other shot on goal.

Sam Houston will wrap up a six-match road trip when the Bearkats head to Beaumont on Sunday to face Lamar at 7 p.m.
