ARLINGTON – The Bearkats proved on Sunday why they are the No. 1 ranked team in the country. They posted a 3-0 record on the final day of the PVU Invitational to claim the title in on of the best fields of the season.
The Kats knocked off No. 3 Nebraska and No. 5 Vanderbilt on their way to their first title at the International Training and Research Center, the home of the US Bowling Hall of Fame.
"This one is very special for us," said head coach Brad Hagen. "Not only is this location special because of what it means to our sport, but it was also the site of our very first competition in program history. This is the building it all started for us, so to finally win a tournament here is special."
The Kats qualified for the best-of-7 championship bracket as the No. 2 seed and faced Nebraska in the opening match. The Cornhuskers came out of the gate strong and took a 3-1 lead in the match. The Kats responded with three straight games in the 200s and won the final three games to take the match.
In the finals, it was another seven-game thriller for the Bearkats against Vandy, who had earned the No. 1 seed. This time it was the Bearkats who got up early, taking the first two games of the match. Vandy responded winning games 3 and 4. The Kats took game 5 and Vandy won game 6 to set up a seventh game for the championship.
With the title on the line, the seventh game went right down to the finish, with the Kats pulling off a 202-195 win to clinch their third tournament title of the season.
"We've had a lot of success in this building over the years but have never gotten over the hump," Hagen said. "After last weekend's craziness this is a huge mental boost moving forward and puts us back on track toward our ultimate goals."
Bea Hernandez was named to the All-Tournament team, her third of the season.
The Kats finished the tournament with a 10-3 record, with nine wins coming against teams ranked in the top 20 in the country. Five of those nine wins were against top-10 competition.
