Bearkat tennis pushing through Fall 2022 slate

HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston women's tennis team has high expectations for the 2023 season, but head coach Rob Hubbard is fully aware that the fall 2022 season holds its own importance in setting the stage for a successful spring.

The Bearkats have three returners back from last year's team, but are welcoming seven newcomers that Hubbard feels could be impactful this year. A handful of those returners have been on display early in this fall season in events in Corpus Christi and Fort Worth, with two more events upcoming in October.

Hubbard's crew opened the fall at the Islander Invitational with players such as Paula Cerda and freshman Vianne Schwab showing well. Cerda, a transfer from Stephen F. Austin, won two of her three matches, picking up an opening-round win in straight sets over An Jolic from Lamar before dominating in straight sets over Alessa Maier from A&M-Kingsville.

Meanwhile, Schwab won consecutive matches in her draw, taking down Yeva Kononovych from Tyler Junior College before defeating teammate Linn Svard one match later.

Both of those players also traveled to the ITA Texas Regional Championship in Fort Worth two weeks later, competing as both a doubles team and in the singles draws in the single-elimination event.

Hubbard will be counting on each of them and the rest of the team as they head to Lamar on Saturday and Sunday for the Kats' third event of the summer. The event will include teams from Lamar, Stephen F. Austin and A&M-Corpus Christi in a round-robin draw format.

Two weeks later Sam Houston will play an event of its own when it hosts the Aramark Bearkat Invitational at the McAdams Tennis Center. The format will be similar, but with a larger, six-team field that includes Northwestern State, UTSA, SFA, Lamar and Tyler Junior College, a program regarded as the top junior college program in the nation.

He is pleased with the work his squad has put in up to this point, despite dealing with a number of nagging injuries and illness that has hampered progress this fall; however, he knows play this fall will be a big directive in how the lineup shapes out when the Kats begin the spring season, their second and final year in the WAC.
