Kats near top at White Sands Invitational

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas — The Sam Houston men's golf team is five strokes off the lead following the opening round of the White Sands Bahamas Invitational at the Ocean Club Golf Course on Friday.

The Bearkats had a solid first day, shooting 9-under 279 on the par-72, 7,159-yard course to move into a tie for fourth place with Southern Mississippi. Arkansas State is in first at 14-under 274 followed by No. 43 Duke (276) and Stetson. Nebraska (280) is sixth, ULM (282) seventh, VCU (285) eighth, Troy (286) ninth, UTEP (287) 10th, Texas State (291) 11^th and Delaware (301) 12^th.

Bret Gray had an impressive start to lead Sam Houston with a 6-under 66 which has him tied for first in the individual standings. He had consecutive birdies on holes 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 then again on 13 and 15 with only one bogey in the round.

Gene Chaikangwal was also under for the day with a 70. He had birdies on 2, 11 and 16 with just one bogey as well to move into a tie for 20^th.

Josh German is one stroke back of Chaikangwal in a tie for 23^rd with his 1-under 71. He had birdies on 10, 11, 13 and 15 to go along with three bogeys.

Samuel McKenzie shot even par for the day to tie for 34^th, and Ting-Wei Hsieh is tied for 48^th at 2-over 74.

Round two begins Saturday at 8 a.m. and the tournament will conclude with the final 18 holes on Sunday.
