Kats pummel Dixie State 77-53

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston jumped out to a quick lead and coasted to a 77-53 victory over Dixie State on an icy Thursday evening at Johnson Coliseum.

The Bearkats bounced back from a loss at Seattle to improve to 14-10 overall and 9-2 in Western Athletic Conference play.

The Trailblazers (11-11, 4-5) got as close as eight to start the second half, but Sam Houston wasted no time going back up double figures.

Savion Flagg and Demarkus Lampley hit consecutive 3-pointers to put the Bearkats on top 44-30. Sam Houston put the game out of reach with an 18-3 run with baskets by Tristan Ikpe and Lampley and free throws by Flagg, Javion May and Kian Scroggins to push the lead to 26 points.

Flagg led the Kats with a game-high 26 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Lampley had 16 points and seven rebounds, Javon Grant scored seven and May pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.

Sam Houston jumped out to a 14-point lead in the first half thanks to a 13-2 run started by back-to-back baskets by Kian Scroggins. Jarren Cook followed with a 3-pointer and Grant and Flagg hit consecutive 3s to make it 28-14 with just under eight minutes to go.

The Trailblazers answered with an 8-0 to cut the lead to four, but the Bearkats came right back and extended it to double digits.

Demarkus Lampley ended the scoring drought with a 3 in the left corner, and Flagg scored on back-to-back tip-in layups. Lampley hit another 3 right before the end of the half to send Sam Houston into the break up 38-28.
