Herbst sets school record at Texas State Invitational

KYLE - On a day where no one was going low, Jennifer Herbst did the opposite. The Sam Houston sophomore fired a school record and the low round of the day at the Texas State Invitational to surge up the leaderboard on the final day of action.

She fired a 65 on Tuesday to set a new school record by a shot, three shots better than the next best round of the day, to move up 11 spots on the leaderboard to finish third. She was one of just two golfers to shot in the 60s on the day and one of only four golfers under par.

As a team, the Bearkats slipped one spot to 6^th in the 12-team field. They shot a 300, which was their best round of the tournament.

Herbst played a near flawless round, going bogey free with seven birdies on the day. Her best stretch was on the back-9 with four birdies in a five-hole span. The previous record of 66 had been done four times in program history, including once already this season by Herbst. Gianti Mahardhika was the first to set the record in 2016. Hanna Alberto also shot a 66 at the Texas State Invitational last season and Zulaikah Nasser shot a 66 earlier this season at the USA Intercollegiate, the same event Herbst shot her 66.

Nasser had the second-best round of the day for the Bearkats, shooting a 76 and finishing tied for 22^nd. Leah Alberto finished in a tie for 32^nd at 16-over for the tournament. Cari Denson shot a 79 and was tied for 46^th. Anna Takahashi finished in a tie for 50^th at 24 over.

The Kats will have a month off before returning to action on March 7 for the UNF Collegiate in Jacksonville, Fla.
