HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston tennis team battled UTRGV to the wire but just missed opening WAC play with a win Saturday at the McAdams Tennis Center.
The Vaqueros squeaked out the victory 4-3 by winning the final match of the day at No. 2 singles. Marjorie Souza defeated
Andjela Vidovic 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to clinch the victory for UTRGV.
After losing the doubles point 2-0, Sam Houston came storming back.
Megan Basson knocked off Isabelle Bahr 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and
Sahithi Vutukuru took down Sandra Putz 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to give the Kats a 2-1 lead.
Petra Kaszas pushed the lead to 3-1 for Sam Houston by defeating Katarina Sasaroga 0-6, 6-2, 6-0. The Vaqueros closed the match with three straight wins including a 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory by Stefanie Wilske over
Isidora Zivkovic at No. 5, and a 6-4, 6-4 win by Barbara Martinez over
Lusine Chobanyan in the No. 6 spot.
The Bearkats will try to bounce back against Lamar on Sunday at 11 a.m.
