Texas outlasts Kats in pitching duel

AUSTIN — Christine Billmeier turned in a solid pitching performance in the circle, but the Sam Houston softball team couldn't muster any offense in a 2-0 loss to Texas on Wednesday night.
Â
The best scoring opportunity for the Bearkats (5-10) came in the seventh inning when Hannah Scheaffer hit a leadoff single and her pinch runner Caitlyn Goodeaux stole second base. Brailey Wasik drew a two-out walk, but Elia Hebel hit a sharp groundball right to first base to end it.
Â
Billmeier (1-2) took the loss despite only allowing two runs on seven hits in six innings of work. She recorded her first three strikeouts of the season.
Â
Texas scored in the first inning on a double and a triple to take the early lead.
Â
Sam Houston had batters reach in the first three innings. Brodie Quinlan drew a walk in the first, Wasik singled in the second and Sheridan Fisher was hit by a pitch in the third but all three were left stranded at first base.
Â
The Kats were able to work out of a jam in the fourth inning. The Longhorns had a runner reach third on an error to begin the inning and a bunt single eventually led to runners on second and third.
Â
Billmeier ended the threat by forcing a shallow fly ball to center field and a groundout on a great defensive play by shortstop Emily Telg.
Â
Texas was able to add an insurance run in the sixth on a solo home run.
Â
The Bearkats open WAC play this weekend when they host Lamar in a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 4 p.m.
