WACO — One hit in the first inning proved to be the difference as the Sam Houston softball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Baylor at Getterman Stadium on Friday evening.
The Bears (21-18) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first thanks to a double with the bases loaded. The batter was thrown out at third by
Ellie Grill trying for the triple to end the frame.
Sam Houston (11-31) answered with a run in the second to cut it to 3-1.
Kyndal Kutac was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. She made it to third on groundout by
Brailey Wasik, and Kutac scored on an RBI groundout by Grill.
After allowing that three-run double in the first, starting pitcher
Mika Vento (4-14) settled in. She tossed four consecutive scoreless innings to keep the Bearkats in striking distance.
Sam Houston had a golden opportunity in the sixth.
Kylie Hobbs reached on an error, Kutac singled through left side and Wasik walked to load the bases with one out. Baylor was able to get a strikeout and force at home to end the threat.
