Women's golf takes 2nd at WAC Championship

KERRVILLE – The Sam Houston women came up three shots short of a championship on Wednesday at the WAC Championships at Riverhill Country Club on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bearkats finished behind defending the WAC Champions New Mexico State. After entering the final round trailing by six strokes, the Bearkats started chipping away.Â

Led by a strong performance from sophomore Jennifer Herbst who shot a tournament-best 68, the Kats cut the lead to 1 on multiple occasions, but just never could overcome the lead by the Aggies.Â

Herbst played a near flawless round on Wednesday, shooting a bogey free round. Her score of 68 was not only the low of the day, but was also the only round in the 60s all three days of the championship. She finished tied for third at 1-over, four shots behind the individual medalist, Siripatsorn Patchana from Grand Canyon.Â

Anna Takahashi also turned in a top 10 performance, finishing tied for ninth at 10-over for the championship following a 78 on Wednesday. She made the turn at 2-over, but carded a double bogey on 10, on her way to a four-over back nine. It's the third top 10 of the season for Takahashi after back to back top-6 finishes to start the season.Â

Zulaikah Nasser was 13th after shooting a 77 on Wednesday. Nasser was even on the day after nine holes, but stumbled on 10 and 11 with a double bogey followed by a triple. She regrouped to close strong with seven pars to finish out the round and keep the Kats in contention.

Leah Alberto had the second best round of the day for the Bearkats, shooting a 75. Her day included 15 pars and three bogeys to finish 16th overall. Viera Permatta Rosada finished in a tie for 30th following a 78 on Wednesday, shooting 21-over for the championship.Â

The Bearkats will now have to wait for the NCAA selection show to see if they will receive an invite to their third consecutive NCAA Regional.Â
