Herbst named WAC Player of the Year, 3 make 1st team

After a runner up finish at the WAC Championships this week, the Sam Houston women's golf team took home top honors with the release of the all-conference teams on Friday.

Sophomore Jennifer Herbst was named the WAC Player of the Year, while the Kats placed three on the first team. The Bearkats were the only school to place three golfers on the first team.

Herbst earns the honors after leading the WAC in stroke average throughout the season, finishing with a 71.87 average through 30 rounds. In addition, she boasted the top round of the 2022 WAC Championship, firing a 4-under-par 68 in the final round to tie for third among individuals.

In 10 events this season, she finished in the top-10 eight times, the top-5 five times and she posted one tournament win. Twice this season, Herbst shot a school-record round of 65. In every tournament this season she finished in the top 20 with her worst place at 19^th in an 85 player field. Out of her 30 rounds, 14 were played at par or better.

Joining Herbst on the first team are teammates Zulaikah Nasser and Leah Alberto. Nasser finished in a tie for 13^th at the WAC Championship while Alberto finished 16^th.

Nasser has a 72.87 stroke average over 30 competitive rounds this season. She recorded four top 10 finishes while winning two tournaments. In the opening tournament of the season, Nasser shot a 66, which at the time was the all-time Sam Houston low round before it was later broken by Herbst. She shot par or better 13 times this season.

Alberto posted a 75.15 average over 33 competitive rounds with a low round of 70. Three times she finished in the top 10 with a third place finish at HBU as her best of the season. Seven times this year she shot par or better.
