HUNTSVILLE – The UTRGV Vaqueros blew things open with a 6-run fifth inning and blasted their way to a series win with a 13-6 win over Sam Houston in the series finale on Sunday at Don Sanders Stadium.
The game was tied up at 4-4 until the Vaqueros (16-11, 6-6 WAC) exploded for six runs on nine hits in the fifth on their way to 26 hits on the day, a mark one shy of the program record set in 2009.
The Kats (16-12, 7-5 WAC) finished with 10 hits of their own, including a 3-for-4 day from
Lane Brewster and 2-hit games from
Justin Wishkoski,
Carlos Contreras and
Walker Janek.
Matt Dillard took the loss, allowing eight runs in just 4.0 innings, while UTRGV starter Jesus Aldaz earned the win with 6.0 of work, allowing five runs on eight hits.
Sam Houston will next head to Houston on Tuesday for the second game of the Don Sanders Cup series before hitting the road again for a weekend series at Abilene Christian.
