Freshmen lead Kats at WAC Championship

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – A day after setting the new school record for the low opening round at a conference championship, the Bearkats set the all-time low postseason round with a 281 and will take a four shot lead into the final day at the WAC Championships.

For the second straight day, a freshman led the way for the Bearkats. This time it was Bret Gray, who fired a 68 and moved into the top 5.

As a team, the Kats are 11-under for the will take a four-shot lead into Sunday's final round. ACU had the low team round of the day and have moved to 7-under and will join Grand Canyon (-5) in the final group with the Bearkats.

Freshman Gene Chaikangwal once again had another strong day for the Kats. He backed up his opening round 69 with a 70 on Saturday and is in a tie for second, two shots off the individual lead.

An eagle on the front 9 helped Gray as he made the turn at 1-under. Then a bogey free back 9 that included three birdies surged Gray up the leaderboard and put him in contention for the individual medalist as he sits at 4-under for the championship and three shots back.

The third freshman in the lineup for the Bearkats, Josh German, also made a mode up the leaderboard on Saturday, shooting a 71 and moving up 7 spots to a tie for 13^that even par. He opened his day with nine straight pars before dropping a stroke on No. 10. But back-to-back birdies on Nos. 13 and 14 got him back under par where he stayed.

Chad Sewell bounced back from an opening nine holes where he was 3-over, to play a bogey free back 9 with three birdies to finish with an even par round of 72. He'll enter the final round at 1-over and tied for 16^th.

Jack Randle is tied for 24^th after shooting a 77 on Saturday. He will get the final round started for the Bearkats Sunday morning when he tees off at 11:15. Chaikangwal will be the last Bearkat off the tees at 11:51.
