Golfers make big move on Day 2 at NCAA

On a day the Bearkats needed to be good, they were. In the second round of the NCAA Albuquerque Regional, the Kats shot the second-best round of the day and have put themselves in contention to advance.
The Bearkats fired a 2-under, 286 which was an improvement of 16 shots over their Round 1 total. Only Oregon and Georgia were better, each shooting 4-under for the day.
Jennifer Herbst shot the low round of the day with a 69. She was one of five golfers to shoot a 69 on Tuesday. It also marks the lowest round even in a regional, moving past Hanna Alberto's 70 in the final round in 2019.Â
Herbst is currently in a tie for 6th place overall at 1-under for the tournament. Starting the day on No. 10, Herbst got off to a hot start. She birdied No. 11 and followed with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 13 and 14. A birdie on No. 18 gave her a bogey free back 9 at 4-under. A birdie on No. 1 put her at 5-under for the day. After three bogeys on holes 3, 4 and 8, she closed strong with a birdie on No. 9 to finish with a 69.Â
With 18 holes remaining, the Bearkats are in the hunt for a spot in the NCAA Championship. The top four teams and two individuals on non-advancing teams earn a trip to the NCAA Championships in Arizona. The Bearkats are just five strokes out of an advancing place. Herbst is currently tied for the final advancing individual spot.
Leah Alberto also had a big round for the Bearkats on Tuesday, shooting a 1-under 71. She had a pair of birdies on her opening nine holes and made the turn at 1-under. After dropping back to even for the day she birdies Nos. 5 and 7. A bogey on the final hole close out her round as one of the biggest movers on the leaderboard. She climbed 18 spots on Tuesday to a tie for 21st.
Joining Alberto at 3-over for the tournament is Viera Permata Rosada. She opened her day with 12 straight pars and after bogeys on Nos. 4 and 8, she closed with her only birdie of the day for a 1-over round of 73.
Zulaikah Nasser also shot a 73 on Tuesday, improving by five shots from her Monday round. She was 2-over after nine holes, but played a bogey free round on her back 9 with a birdie on No. 7 to give her a 1-over round on the day and move her up 15 spots on the leaderboard to 39th.Â
Anna Takahashi shot her second round of 84 and is in 65th place.Â
The Kats will once again start their day on No. 10 and will be in the first group off the tees at 9 a.m.Â
