BRYAN – Chad Sewell finished his first round at the NCAA Men's Golf Regional strong and stands in 16th place after the opening 18 holes of play.Â
Â
Sewell, a senior from Conroe playing as an individual for the Bearkats, closed his day with a birdie on No. 15 and then a birdie on No. 18 to close out an opening round 71 at Traditions Golf Club.Â
Â
Sewell is one of 25 golfers who were under par on the opening day of play at the Bryan Regional.Â
Â
His day got off to a bit of a slow start, with bogeys on two of the first five holes. He rebounded with a birdie on No. 6 and made the turn at 1-over par.
Â
He then birdied No. 10 to start his back nine, one of his three birdies on his final 9 holes.Â
Â
Sewell will be looking to make a move on Tuesday, as he battles for one advancing individual position to the NCAA Championships in Arizona. The top five teams will advance to the NCAA Championship along with the top individual not on an advancing team.
Â
The current leader after 18 holes is Chase Sienkiewicz from Arizona, who is 7-under after shooting a 65. The top individual not on a top five team is Hugo Townsend from Boise State who is 3-under. Â
Â
Round two will be played on Tuesday and Sewell will play his third and final round on Wednesday.Â
