Men's golf senior Chad Sewell will have his season extended for at least one more event. Wednesday, Sewell received an at large bid to play in the NCAA Bryan Regional.
Â
Sewell will be among a group of 10 individuals and 13 teams playing at Traditions Club in a 54-hole tournament May 16-18.Â
Â
"It is great Chad will get the chance to continue his season against some of the best golfers in the country," said head coach Brandt Kieschnick. "Plus he will get the chance to compete close to home and have a nice sized gallery following him for three days."Â
Â
Sewell, a grad transfer from Conroe, is one of 45 individuals who received an invitation to compete when their teams were not selected. The Bearkats, who were runners up in last week's Western Athletic Conference Championship, were one of the first teams left out of Wednesday's selection.
Â
"I'm just really proud of what our team was able to accomplish," Kieschnick said. "We took a young team to the conference championship and missed a championship by one shot. This team is set up to be very successful for a long time."
Â
Sewell was named the WAC Player of the Year on Wednesday as well. He led the league in scoring average finishing with a 71.3 average through 29 rounds. In 10 events, he was top-10 in six of them, earning a top-5 finish four times and posting one tournament win at the Bentwater Intercollegiate.
Â
He will be the seventh Bearkat to compete at the NCAA Regionals as an individual and the first since Scott Kelly in 2010.Â
Â
Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The top five teams and the low individual not on an advancing team from each regional will advance to the finals. Team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 27-June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
