Golf sits in 10th after first round at regional

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Jennifer Herbst and Viera Permata Rosada paced the Bearkats on the opening day of the NCAA women's golf Albuquerque Regional as the Bearkats stand in a tie for 10^th after the first day of play.

Herbst and Rosada each fired two-over-par round of 74 and currently stands in a tie for 21^st in the 65-player field. As a team, the Bearkats, who began play on hole No. 10, shot an opening round of 302. They are three shots back of Oklahoma and 10 shots out of a qualifying position with two rounds remaining. Top seed Oregon leads the tournament at 4-under.

Herbst opened her day with a bogey, but then birdied twice to make the turn at 1-under par. She dropped three strokes in her final 9 holes to finish at 2-over.

Viera Permata Rosada posted a solid opening round score, shooting 74. She sits just outside the top 20, in 22^nd place. After back-to-back bogeys to start her round, Rosada then strung together 12 straight pars before a birdie on No. 6 (her 15^th hole).

Leah Alberto, the only member of the team with regional experience shot 76. She opened with birdies on Nos. 11 and 12 to get out to a good start. She played her opening 9 holes at 1-under.

Anna Takahashi shot an 84 and is in 65^th.

As a team, the Kats had just five birdies on the day. Four came on the starting back nine, and just one from Rosada after making the turn.

The top four teams and the top two individuals not on teams advancing will earn qualification to the 2022 NCAA Women's Golf Championships May 20-25 at Greyhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
