Kats lead at Remax Invitational

HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston women's golf team jumped out to a commanding lead during the first day of the Remax Prime Properties Invitational at the Bearkat Course on Monday.

The Bearkats turned in rounds of 279 and 283 for a total of 6-under 562 on the par-71, 6,058-yard course. Houston Christian is second at 593 followed by ULM (595), Oklahoma City University (605), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (607) and UTEP (607), Tarleton (616), UTRGV (620), Texas A&M-Commerce (621), Stephen F. Austin (622), Lamar (623), UTA (635) and Texas Southern (647).

All six of Sam Houston's team members currently stand in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard.

Zulaikah Nasser is in first place through 36 holes of competition. She turned in rounds of 67 and 69 to finish at 6-under 136 on the day which saw her record 10 birdies.

Jenn David is one stroke back at 5-under 137 following rounds of 67 and 70. She had 10 birdies, but one double bogey has her just off the lead.

Viera Permata Rosada is tied for third with a 3-over 145. She rebounded from a 3-over 74 in the first round to finish with an even-par 71.

Jennifer Herbst and Anna Takahashi, who is playing as an individual, are both tied for fifth at 4-over 146. Herbst was even 71 through the first 18 holes but shot 4-over 75 in the second round while Takahashi shot 72 and 74.

Leah Alberto is in 10^thplace following rounds of 75 and 73 for a 6-over 148, and individual medalist Cari Denson is tied for 32^nd with rounds of 77 and 78 for a 13-over 155.

The third and final round will be held Tuesday.
