Tennis to host Bearkat invitational

HUNTSVILLE — Four tennis programs that competed against each other in the Southland Conference for almost two decades gather this weekend in the eighth annual Bearkat Invitational tennis event hosted by Sam Houston.

Action begins Friday afternoon at the McAdams Tennis Center on campus. Admission is free.

Sam Houston will play host to UTSA, Northwestern State and Lamar in a flighted tournament that will feature both singles and doubles action. Play will continue Saturday and Sunday with competition at all six singles and three doubles levels.

UTSA now is a member of the American Athletic Conference while the Bearkats are looking to their first spring as Conference USA competitors. Northwestern State and Lamar remain in the Southland.

The event has been a mainstay of Sam Houston's fall tennis schedule since 2017. The roster for the Kats in this year's tournament is headed by a pair of seniors, Paula Cerda and Sahithi Vutukuru, who both bring three seasons of NCAA Division I experience to the table.

Sophomores Aaliyah Hohmann, Vianne Schwab and Linn Svaerd are back after winning varsity letters as freshman last spring. The trio alternated dual match action at the number four, five and six positions and saw extensive action in doubles as well. Yasmin El Fadili also returns for her sophomore season as a Bearkat.

Two freshmen, India Fenieys and Roberta Sechi, bring a solid junior credentials from France and Italy, respectively.

The Bearkat Invitational marks Sam Houston's third fall tournament on the 2023 calendar. The team will wrap up fall action with the Ragin' Cajun Invitational at Lafayette, Louisiana on November 3-5. The regular dual match schedule will begin during the spring semester.
