HUNTSVILLE — The Bearkats are as hot as they can be at the plate right now.
Sam Houston tallied 17 hits, seven for extra bases, in an 18-6 drubbing of McNeese on Tuesday at Don Sanders Stadium.
The Bearkats (3-1) picked up right where they left off with their offensive onslaught following Sunday's 25-2 win over Rhode Island. Sam Houston erupted for six runs in the bottom of the first after the Cowboys (1-2) scored two in the top of the frame.
Lane Brewster led off with his third home run of the season, a towering shot to right center field.
Justin Wishkoski followed with a double, and
Carlos Contreras singled to set up an RBI single to left by
Walker Janek.
Clayton Chadwick was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and
Easton Loyd drove in a pair with a single to center field. A wild pitch and a fielder's choice by
Myles Jefferson put the Bearkats on top 6-2.
Sam Houston tacked on three more in the second inning on RBI singles by Loyd and Davis and two runs in the fourth on sacrifice fly balls by
Joe Redfield and
Lane Brewster.
The Bearkats weren't done with the big innings. They plated six more in the seventh on a three-run triple by Loyd, who had a career-high seven RBIs, an RBI single by Davis and on a two-run blast by
Joe Redfield.
Chandler David got the win in relief of starter
Gavi Coldiron, who gave up six runs in 4 1/3 innings. David tossed two shutout innings, allowing one hit with four strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Sam Houston heads to Reckling Park to face Rice on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
