ROUND ROCK — Sam Houston plated four runs in the top of the ninth inning to put away Kansas State with an 8-3 victory at the Karbach Classic on Saturday at Dell Diamond.
The Bearkats (5-2) moved to 2-0 in the tournament after downing Iowa 6-0 in the opener on Friday. Sam Houston will battle No. 1 LSU in the finale on Sunday at 4 p.m.
The Kats scored a run in the first four innings to take a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. The Wildcats scratched across a run in the frame and two more in the eighth to make it a one-run game.
Sam Houston ended a four-inning scoring drought to put the game out of reach in the ninth.
Justin Wishkoski led off with a double down the left field line and moved to third when
Carlos Contreras reached on an error.
Walker Janek followed with a two-run double, and
Easton Loyd put the exclamation point on the inning with a two-run blast over the wall in right field.
Starting pitcher
Steven Beard was steady through seven innings. He allowed just one run on four hits with six strikeouts to improve to 1-1 on the season.
Janek drove in the first run of the game with a groundout in the first.
Myles Jefferson had an RBI single and double, and Loyd drove in a run with a hit in the fourth.
