HUNTSVILLE — For the second straight match it came down to the wire, but the Sam Houston tennis team once came up short in a 4-3 loss to UTSA at the McAdams Tennis Center.
After the Roadrunners secured the doubles point, the Bearkats tied the match when
McKenzy Byfield won at No. 6 by default. UTSA pulled ahead when Magda Tuells topped Anastasia Khokholva 6-2, 6-1.
Paula Cerda came up big to tie the match for Sam Houston when she took down Alexandra Weir at No. 2 7-5, 6-4. The Roadrunners went on top again when Aleksandra Zlatarova fought off
Megan Basson in three sets 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.
Vianne Schwab then came up with a clutch victory to tie the match again when she battled Evaand Beyebach to a 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-1 victory.
That set up a winner-take all match on the third court between
Sahithi Vutukuru and UTSA's Fatima Gutierrez, and it was only fitting that in a tight dual match it went three sets. Vutukuru captured the first set 6-4, but Gutierrez was able to tie the match with a 6-2 win then just eked out the third 7-5.
