EDINBURG — Sam Houston scored two runs in the eighth to secure a Western Athletic Conference series victory with a 6-4 win over UTRGV on Saturday.
The Bearkats (12-8, 5-0) have now won six games in a row heading into the series finally at noon on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
The game was back and forth as the Vaqueros (9-9, 1-4) managed to tie the contest each time Sam Houston took the lead.
The Bearkats grabbed a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth thanks to a sacrifice fly by
Easton Loyd in the fourth, an RBI single by
Tyler Davis in the fifth and a solo home run to right by Loyd in the sixth. UTRGV was able to tie it with a run in fourth and two in the sixth.
Sam Houston briefly went back on top in the seventh on an RBI single to center field by
Walker Janek to bring home Davis. Yet again, the Vaqueros managed to scratch across a run in the bottom of the frame to knot the game at 4.
The Kats got something brewing in the eighth when
Carlos Contreras drew a lead-off walk and pinch runner
Caleb Cotton stole second base.
Lane Brewster also walked and both runners advanced on a double steal to setup a two-run single by
Joe Redfield for the game-winning runs.
Rome Shubert got the win in relief by tossing 1 1/3 shutout innings.
Braden Davis earned the save with a scoreless ninth inning.
