EDINBURG — Sam Houston jumped on UTRGV to coast to an 11-2 victory to complete a Western Athletic Conference series sweep on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
The Bearkats (13-8, 6-0 WAC) have now won seven straight games to get back on track after a losing six of their previous seven.
Sam Houston put three quick runs on the board in the first inning.
Walker Janek hit a two-run double, and
Justin Wishkoski added an RBI single.
After the Vaqueros cut the lead to two with a run in the third, but the Bearkats began to pull away in the fourth.
Easton Loyd led off the frame with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error.
Carlos Contreras followed with a single to setup an RBI double by
Myles Jefferson and two-run single by Tyler Janek to make it 6-1.
That was plenty of support for starter
Gavi Coldiron. He went five solid innings with five strikeouts while only allowing one earned run on three hits to earn the win
Sam Houston added two runs in the fifth on a single by Loyd and a sacrifice fly by Jefferson.
Joe Redfield added an RBI double in the sixth,
Clayton Chadwick drove in a run with a groundout and the final run came on a single by Jefferson in the ninth.
