WACO — Sam Houston's rally in the ninth came up just short in a 7-6 loss to Baylor at Baylor Ballpark on Tuesday evening.
The Bears took 6-4 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to put the pressure on the Bearkats. Sam Houston responded in the eighth after a 70-minute weather delay.
Lane Brewster singled up the middle to begin the frame and scored when
Justin Wishkoski reached on an error by the centerfielder.
Carlos Contreras groundout to drive in a run to tie the game at 6.
Baylor was able to scratch across the winning run in the bottom of the inning thanks to a double and an RBI single.
The Bearkats took a 1-0 lead in the first when
Tyler Davis led off with a single and came around to score when Contreras reached on an error by the shortstop.
Baylor took its first lead with two runs in the second, but Sam Houston tied it in the top of the third.
Joe Redfield began the inning with a double then scored on an RBI single by Wishkoski.
After the Bears went back up by a pair of runs in the third, the Bearkats once again answered in fifth.
Redfield led off with another double and moved to third on a single by Brewster. Contreras ripped a two-run single to tie the game at 4 after Brewster stole second base.
Sam Houston hits the road for a three-game WAC series at Grand Canyon this weekend.
