HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston just beat the storm to hold on for a 3-2 victory over New Mexico State on Friday in the first game of a three-game WAC set at Don Sanders Stadium.
The Bearkats (17-10, 9-1) have won four straight and stand atop the WAC standings. Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m.
Starter
Coltin Atkinson gave up a solo home run in the second inning as the Aggies grabbed a 1-0 lead. He settled in after that and allowed just one more run over the next four innings to improve to 4-1 on the season.
Sam Houston finally answered New Mexico State with a run in the fourth when
Carlos Contreras singled to left, and
Myles Jefferson laced a double down the left-field line to setup a sacrifice fly by
Clayton Chadwick to tie it.
The Kats scored what would prove to be the game-winning runs in the fifth as

Jefferson drove in the insurance run with a single to right to bring Contreras home.
