HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston fell in an early hole it could not crawl out of in a 10-6 loss to New Mexico State in the finale of a three-game Western Athletic Conference series at Don Sanders Stadium on Sunday.
The setback snapped a five-game winning streak for the Bearkats (18-11, 10-2 WAC). Sam Houston had already clinched the series victory with wins on Friday and Saturday.
The Aggies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Kats were able to get a run back in the bottom of the frame when Easton Loyd doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe Redfield.
New Mexico State scored three runs in the second to make it 5-1, and once again, Sam Houston answered on an RBI single by Loyd. The Aggies began to pull away with a two more runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.
The Bearkats made a final charge with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull within 8-6.
Loyd singled to start the inning and back-to-back walks by Redfield and Tyler Davis loaded the bases. Contreras drove in a run on a fielder's choice, a throwing error plated another run and Clayton Chadwick ripped a two-run double to right field.
New Mexico State added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth as Sam Houston couldn't muster any more offense at the plate.
The Bearkats will host Dallas Baptist on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
