STEPHENVILLE — Sam Houston flipped the script on Tarleton to split a doubleheader in the first two games of a WAC series on Friday.
After getting run ruled in game one, the Bearkats (18-30, 8-9 WAC) exploded at the plate by scoring nine runs in the first inning en route to a 16-1 victory in five innings in game two. The two teams will complete the series with a single game at noon on Saturday.
Jordan Peno,
Julia Herzinger and
Elia Hebel all had RBI singles in the outburst.
Haleigh Carter walked with the bases loaded to bring in another run, and
Brodie Quinlan and
Hannah Scheaffer hit back-to-back two-run doubles in the first.
Herzinger launched her second home run of the day to make it 10-0 in the second. An error led to another run, and Tricia Yartosky hit a sacrifice fly to center to cap a three-run second inning.
Scheaffer plated two more runs in the third with a single. The final two runs came on an RBI single by Herzinger in the fourth, and another RBI double by Scheaffer in the fifth.
Emma Guindon went the distance in the circle to improve to 6-7 on the season. She struck out three and allowed one run on two hits.

Sam Houston jumped out to an early lead but could not hold on in an 11-3 loss in game one on Friday in six innings.
The Bearkats score a run in the first inning after
Elia Hebel and
Jordan Peno drew back-to-back two-out walks.
Julia Herzinger, who has provided an offensive spark for Sam Houston, laced an RBI double to left center field to make it 1-0.
The Kats pushed the lead to 2-0 in the second inning when
Brodie Quinlan singled up the middle, stole second and advanced to third on a flyout by
Emily Telg.
Ellie Grill dropped an RBI single into center field to bring Quinlan home.
The Texans then scored nine unanswered runs before walking it off in the bottom of the sixth for the run-rule win.
Herzinger hit a solo home run to right field on the fifth for Sam Houston's only other run.
