FORT WORTH – The Bearkat women's tennis team will face its toughest challenge of the 2024 fall schedule this weekend when it travels to the Bayard Friedman Tennis Center on the campus of TCU to compete at the annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association Texas Regional Championships.
A total of 117 individual players from the NCAA Division I women's tennis squads in Texas will duel for the opportunity to advance to the ITA and NCAA annual national championship competition later this fall. The event includes competition in both singles and doubles.
"This is the toughest field of any event we have on our schedule," Sam Houston head coach Rob Hubbard said. "All of the top Division I players in Texas will be there. It will be a great opportunity for us to test ourselves against the best."
The Fort Worth event is one of 14 regional events this weekend at sites from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
Sam Houston's 2024-25 roster includes juniors Christine Jevicky, Jacqueline Scnabel, Adithi Venkata Krishnan, Nayuma Subba and Aaliyah Hohmann and sophomore Sara Sadadinovic.
The tournament in Fort Worth marks the squad's second event of the 2024 fall schedule. Sam Houston opened the fall schedule at the Central Arkansas tournament in Conway, Ark., in September.
"This is such a marvelous opportunity for our young team to experience," Hubbard said. "We are especially excited this year because we were able to get each one of our singles players and doubles pairings into the draw."
The Bearkat tennis squad will be making the program's 20th appearance in past 21 Texas ITA annual regional events. Sam Houston student-athletes have competed in competitions hosted by TCU, Baylor, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech in that time span.
Fabienne Gettwart and Sahaja Yamalapalli each posted the Kat program's best ITA regional performances by reaching the Round of 16 in singles in 2014 and 2019, respectively.
Following the ITA Regionals, the Bearkats will host the annual Bearkat Invitational October 25-27. The event will mark the opening of the new Chuck and Wanda Beckner Tennis Complex located at 515 Bowers Boulevard across from the Don Sanders baseball stadium.
A trip to the UTEP Invitational in El Paso November 1-3 will complete fall action.
