HUNTSVILLE - The Sam Houston men's golf team is set to open its spring schedule on Monday and Tuesday when it co-hosts, along with Rice, the Bentwater Intercollegiate presented by Huntsville Toyota.
The Kats and Owls will be part of a 13-team field that also includes Southern Illinois, Missouri State, Tarleton, A&M-Commerce, Stephen F. Austin, UT Arlington, UTRGV, Nicholls, UTSA, WKU and Midland College along with individuals from Houston, Baylor and TCU.Â
Play at Bentwater Country Club in Montgomery will begin on Monday morning with the first half of a 36-hole day and conclude on Tuesday with an 18-hole finale. Live stats will be available throughout the event and fans are encouraged to follow @BearkatsMGOLF on X and Instagram for updates.Â
The Bearkats will be looking to juniors Bret Gray and Josh German to lead the way, with each coming off a major amateur wins over the summer. Gray went wire-to-wire winning the 114th Texas Amateur in June, a prestigious event which has been won by the likes of Will Zalatoris, Scott Verplank, Mark Brooks, and Ben Crenshaw, among others. The lefty from the Alamo City shot 11 under at The Clubs at Huston Oaks to secure the win and propel him into a good fall season for the Bearkats.Â
Â
"I believed in myself and seeing all the great players and names on the trophy from previous Texas Amateur's just gave me a lot of confidence," Gray said. "I believed I could play at this level and it was humbling the Texas Amateur Champ. I want to use this experience to help our team compete at the highest level."
Â
German, meanwhile, won the 121st Met Amateur Championship at Friars Head. He finished the stroke-play portion of the event as the No. 5 seed before going on to win four consecutive matches, along with a 2&1 win in the championship match to claim the title.
Â
"Winning the Met Am gave me so much confidence and showed me I can win in the match-play format," German said. "Conference USA uses match-play so the MetAm victory gave me confidence I can win in this format and use my experience to help us compete for a Conference USA Championship."Â
Â
"It was great to see their success this summer," Bearkat head coach Brandt Kieschnick said. "Bret and Josh came into Sam Houston together as freshmen and have pushed each other to get better every day. These two amateur events are some of the most prestigious events in the country and they are very hard to win! I was so proud to see each win at such a high level against the nation's best amateurs. These victories prove the work they've been putting in and that they can play at the highest level. We are going to rely on their leadership and their successes to help this team compete for championships."
Â
The Kats are hoping these summer successes will propel them into a great spring as they are looking to get back to postseason after narrowly missing out the past two seasons. A challenging spring slate awaits the Kats, one which will culminate at the CUSA Championship at Texarkana Country Club April 22-25th.
