Kats lead going to final day of Bentwater Intercollegiate

MONTGOMERY – The Sam Houston men's golf team shot its way to the top of the leaderboard with a strong second round to cap off 36 holes of play on Monday at the Bentwater Intercollegiate at Bentwater Country Club. Â
Sam Houston sat in fifth place after the morning round, but went six under par in Round 2, a mark seven strokes better than the rest of the field. With 18 holes to play the Kats lead the field at +6 overall, four shots ahead of WKU and 11 up on Stephen F. Austin.Â
Bret Gray Josh German led the way in Round 2 with a pair of 67s. German finished with six birdies to his credit in a round which followed an opening-round 73 and has him at –2 for the tournament, one shot back of the individual lead. Â
Gray, meanwhile, roared back after putting up a 75 in Round 1 and sits in fifth place individually. He turned in a 31 on the back nine of Round 2 sandwiching three consecutive birdies around a bogey at the Par-3 13th, his lone blemish of the back half of his round.Â
Ting-Wei Hsieh and Gene Chaikwangwal are not not far back, tied for 12th at +4. Hsieh went 75-71 for his two rounds, while Chaikwangwal put up matching 73s.Â
Players worked through chilly and windy conditions in the morning before calmer conditions in the afternoon showed up on the shores of Lake Conroe. Â
Sam Houston found itself in fifth place after the morning session, putting up a score of 296, just five strokes behind the early pace set by Round-1 leader Missouri State. German and Chaikwangwal led the way with the Kats with matching 73s, putting them in a tie for 12th in individual play. Â
The Bentwater Intercollegiate will conclude on Tuesday with an 18-hole final round. A shotgun start is set for 8:00 a.m. on the shores of Lake Conroe with live scoring available via Golf Stat.Â
