HUNTSVILLE – After seeing three of its last four dual matches not played due to poor weather conditions, the Sam Houston women's tennis team looks to get back into action Sunday afternoon at the McAdams Tennis Center on campus.
The Bearkats will play host to former Southland Conference rival McNeese. First serve for the doubles competition will be at 12 noon. Competition in the six singles matches will follow immediately.
Southland Conference foes from 1988 to 2021, the Bearkats and the Cowgirls have not battled on the tennis courts the past two springs. While McNeese leads the all-time series with 18 victories to 14, Sam Houston won 7-0 in Lake Charles in their last meeting two years ago.
"We face another strong team in McNeese," Sam Houston head coach Rob Hubbard said. "We hope to see the same competitiveness that we saw in the match at Northwestern State. It will be great to get back into action after are weather problems of late."
Sam Houston brings a 3-2 record into the contest. The Bearkats opened their 2024 dual match schedule with a pair of shutout victories over Prairie View A&M and a 6-1 win over UT Tyler in Huntsville. In the team's first two road matches of the season the Kats lost 4-3 at Texas State and 5-2 at Northwestern State.
Scheduled road duels at UTSA, South Alabama and LSU-Shreveport all were wiped out by bad weather conditions with winds of 25 to 30 miles per hour in San Antonio and rain in Louisiana.
The Bearkats feature a balanced roster with freshmen India Fenieys and Robi Sechi, sophomores Aaliyah Hohmann, Yasmin El Fadili, Vianne Schwab and Linn Svaerd, junior Megan Basson and seniors Paula Cerda and Sahithi Vutukuru.
Four of Sam Houston's next six matches will be played at home. The Bearkats will host Lamar on February 23, Valparaiso on March 11 and begin Conference USA action on March 13 hosting UTEP.
