DALLAS – After picking up a win over Oklahoma State on Opening Night of the 2024 season, Sam Houston senior Coltin Atkinson has been named the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week, per a release from the league on Monday.Â
Atkinson, a preseason all-CUSA selection in his fourth year with the program picked up his first win of 2024 and the 20th of his career on Opening Night in leading the Bearkats to a 7-2 win over Oklahoma State, a team ranked in the national top 25 by both Baseball America and Perfect Game. Â
The Kats, one of only two CUSA teams to battle a Power-5 opponent on Opening Weekend, went on to win each of the first two games to clinch the series over the Cowboys. Â
Atkinson went 5.0 innings in his start, punching out six Cowboys without a walk. He allowed just four singles and two runs - one earned - before exiting with a 3-2 lead after the fifth, needing 85 pitches to get there.Â
FIU's Brylan West was named the league's Hitter of the Week after going 10-for-12 with two homers, two doubles and nine RBI in the Panthers' sweep of LIU. Â
The Bearkats have four more games on the slate for this week, beginning Tuesday at Rice in a game set to air on ESPN+. Sam Houston will then return home to host Dartmouth for three games, beginning Friday night at Don Sanders Stadium.
