Kats in sixth after Day 1 of Border Olympics

LAREDO – Hugo Trommeter, Ting-Wei Hsieh and Bret Gray all fired a round of 69 on Monday at the Laredo Country Club to help position the Sam Houston Bearkats in sixth place after two rounds of play at the Border Olympics.Â
Trommeter's 69 came in Round 2 after an opening round of 70, putting him at –5 and in a tie for seventh with 18 holes to play, while Hsieh went 69-72 and is in a five-way tie for 15th at –3 and Gray one shot back at –2 after making up ground in Round 2 following an opening-round 73.Â
Gene Chaikangwal also went 74-71 on Day 1, while Josh German fired a 75-73.Â
As a team the Kats are nine shots under par through two rounds and all alone in sixth place in the 17-team field. However, all teams are chasing Illinois State after the Redbirds went –15 in the second round and will enter Tuesday's final round at –23 overall and eight shots clear of the rest of the field.Â
North Texas (-15), Lipscomb (-13), Rice (-11) and Troy (-10) are also ahead of the Kats.Â
Hsieh and Trommeter each scored five birdies on his opening round to lead the Kats in Round 1, keeping them within seven shots of the lead after early play. Trommeter highlighted his second round with an eagle at the Par-5 13th hole, while Gray played steady throughout his second 18 of the day, carding just one bogey while scoring four birdies to turn in a 69 of his own.Â
The Kats will close out the Border Olympics on Tuesday morning with the final round of the tournament. Live scoring will be available via Smart Golf.Â
