Atkinson named CUSA Pitcher of the Week

DALLAS – After a dominating performance in the Conference USA opener at NM State, Sam Houston senior Coltin Atkinson has been named the CUSA Pitcher of the Week, per a release from the league on Monday.Â
The honor is the second for Atkinson in 2024 and the first since getting a similar nod following a sparkling performance vs Oklahoma State on Opening Night.Â
The senior from Porter was at his best on Friday night in the Bearkats' Conference USA opener at NM State. The Aggies entered the weekend scoring nearly 11 runs per contest, but the righty allowed just two hits at Askew Field, shutting NM State out with an 8.0-inning, complete-game performance. Â
The 8.0 innings was a career long for Atkinson, as was his nine strikeouts, which pushed him past the 200-strikeout plateau for his career. He is the ninth Bearkat in program history to surpass 200 career strikeouts.Â
With an eight-game road trip in the rearview mirror, the Bearkats have six straight games at home, including five on the slate for this week, beginning Tuesday vs Baylor in a game set to air on ESPN+. The Kats will then play host to Northwestern State on Wednesday before welcoming No. 15 Dallas Baptist to Don Sanders Stadium for a three-game CUSA series beginning on Friday.Â
The series vs the nationally-ranked Patriots will be just the fourth time the Bearkats have welcomed a ranked opponent to The Don for a weekend series, with DBU being the highest ranked opponent in Huntsville for a series since 2017.Â
