JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A day after darkness suspended play in round two, the Sam Houston women's golf team rallied with a record performance on Tuesday to take the title at the UNF Collegiate at Jacksonville Golf & Country Club.Â
Sam Houston trailed UTSA by nine shots entering the final round and the Roadrunners did their part, firing under par in round three; however, they were no match for what the Kats had left in the tank on the way to the finish line.Â
The Bearkats set a new program record with a score of 270 in the final round, bettering the previous single-round team score of 274. Â
The score was 18 shots under par as a team for the round and 14 shots better than the Roadrunners and the rest of the field. Four Kats — Jennifer Herbst, Zulaikah Nasser, Grace Jin and Viera Permata Rosata — all fired rounds in the 60s. Â
The win was the third team win of the 2023-24 season for the KatsÂ
That final round was highlighted by Herbst, who rebounded from going 76-76 in the opening two rounds to card a final-round 64. That mark is the best single round in Bearkat history, both by total strokes and relation to par, bettering her own school record of 65 which she reached twice in 2022.Â
The bogey-free round included eight birdies, four on each side, and shot her up 54 spots in the individual standings into a tie for 22nd. Â
But the highest Sam Houston finisher for the week was Nasser, finishing in a tie for seventh overall after going 73-70-68 for the tournament, a mark 5-under par. She teed off for the final round on No. 5 and was at even par for the day before catching fire late in her round, birdying four of her final five holes to card a 68.Â
Rosata and Jin each turned in rounds of 69 in the third round, while Jenn David was also under par with a 71. Â
Rosata was the second-highest finisher of the week for the Kats, going 73-72-69 to tie for 12th. Jin (75-71-69), along with David (71-73-71), finished in a tie for 16th with a three-round total of 215.Â
The Kats will next compete at the Bama Beach Bash on March 17-19 at the Gulf Shores Country Club in Gulf Shores, Ala.
