JACKSONVILLE– The Sam Houston women's basketball team could not hold off Jacksonville State in a 74-70 loss in overtime on Saturday at Pete Mathew Coliseum.
The Kats got ahead early, leading through the first half 31-29. The Gamecocks went to outscore the Kats 20-14 in the third quarter.
With under four minutes to go Sam Houston was trailing 59-49. The Kats went on a 12-2 run to tie it up with 20 seconds to go.
Sam Houston had a chance in regulation when it forced a turnover with six seconds remaining. Both sides were unable to make a play to force overtime, the third time the Kats have gone to overtime in conference play.
Sam Houston opened overtime with a big 3-point shot from Sydnee Kemp. The Bearkats held the lead until the Gamecocks took advantage of a couple fouls to pull out the victory.
Kemp led the team with 19 points, Kaylee Jefferson added 12 and Alexus Seaton put up 11. Raanee Smith grabbed her eight double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bearkats will head to Huntsville, Alabama for the Conference USA Tournament and face the eighth seed. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and to be aired on ESPN+.
