ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Sam Houston seeks its second national championship at the NCAA women's bowling finals April 12-13 at Thunderbowl Lanes.
After winning the Arlington Regional on April 6, the Bearkats are looking to recapture the crown and stand atop the country for the first time since 2014 when Sam Houston brought back the championship from Wickliffe, Ohio.
Standing in the way are three familiar faces, as the national championship finals will be a Conference USA event. Fellow league members Jax State, Arkansas State and Youngstown State will be joining the Kats in the finals.
Sam Houston's first opponent will be the Gamecocks of Jacksonville State, who sit as the top overall seed of the tournament and won the Pittsburgh Regional to reach the finals. Jax State claimed the regular season CUSA title.
When Sam Houston ran into the Gamecocks this season, the Kats fared well against them. The Kats won the baker matches at both the Stallings Invitational and the Music City Classic — two tournaments that the Gamecocks would place second at.
The national championship will be determined via a best-of-three mega-match format in a double-elimination bracket. Round one of the matches will consist of five-player team matches. The following round will be total pinfall matches. If it is necessary, a third round of best-of-seven matches will be used in case of a tie score.
The championship finals will be the format of the third-round tiebreaker, that being best-of-seven matches.
The Bearkats will take on Jax State in their first match April 12 at 8 a.m. CST. Matches can be streamed on NCAA.com.
