Kats in fifth after Day 1 of CUSA Championship

TEXARKANA, Ark. – The Sam Houston Bearkat men's golf team fired a six-over par round of 294 in the opening round of the Conference USA Championship at Texarkana Country Club on Monday and will enter the tournament's second day in a two-way tie for fifth place. Â
Louisiana Tech is pacing the field at eight under par, led by a pair of individual rounds in the 60s. The Bulldogs hold a seven-shot lead over Middle Tennessee, the only other team under par after the first 18 holes.Â
Gene Chaikwangwal led the Kats with an even-par round of 72, while Josh German and Ting-Wei Hsieh each turned in matching 73s. Bret Gray carded a 76 and Hugo Trommetter a 77 to round out the scoring.Â
The Bearkats will tee off in Round 2 at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, looking to climb back into the top half of the 8-team field in stroke play. Â
After three rounds of stroke play, the top-four teams will advance to match play to determine the league's team champion on Thursday, April 25. Â
The individual champion will be crowned at the conclusion of stroke play on Wednesday.
