Longhorns hand Kats Tuesday loss

Box Score

AUSTIN – The Sam Houston Bearkats ran into a buzzsaw on Tuesday night, falling 16-9 to the Texas Longhorns at Disch-Falk Field.

The Longhorns (28-18) erupted for 11 extra-base hits, including five home runs and a pair of grand slams to earn their third straight win and sixth in their last seven games overall.

Gavi Coldiron struck out three for the Kats (24-21), but surrendered six runs in a 4.0-inning start to fall to 3-5 on the year. He was one of five Bearkat arms to see the mound.

Texas starter Charlie Hurley moved to 4-0 on the year with the win, despite issuing four free passes in his time on the bump.

Offensively, Sam Houston had just one hit through the first six innings, a single from Easton Loyd in the third to set the table for the Kats' first run of the game. Caleb Cotton picked up the RBI in that frame on a squeeze bunt.

Offensively, six Kats had hits, including Jeffrey David who extended his hit streak to 16 games in a row with a single in the eighth inning. The lone extra-base hit came from Hunter Autrey, a 2-run double in the 7-run seventh.

The Kats 7-run seventh came off Longhorn relievers Cody Howard and Hudson Hamilton and got going when Brady Christensen opened the scoring with an RBI single, which was followed by three bases-loaded walks issued by Howard. Autrey delivered the big swing of the inning with a 2-run double to the left-center field gap, which was followed by a sacrifice fly from Jake Tatom

For Texas, the night was highlighted by Jared Thomas who went 3-for-4 with five RBI, coming up just a double shy of the cycle. He was one of four Texas hitters with homers in the game and was joined by Will Gasparino with a grand slam as the pair connected on 4-run bombs in both the fifth and sixth innings.

It was back and forth early on as the teams traded runs in the bottom of the second and the top of the third when Caleb Cotton tied it at 1-1 with a squeeze bunt which scored Jace Martinez.

But Texas' Max Beyleu untied it an inning later with a 2-out single to center field and that started a string of 10 unanswered runs by the Longhorn offense. Dee Kennedy and Jared Thomas followed with RBI to cap the 4-run inning.

One frame later the Longhorns pushed five more across, anchored by a grand slam off the bat of Thomas which made it an 11-1 game. An inning later Gasparino added his to up the lead to a comfortable 15-1 margin.

Sam Houston made it a 15-8 game with its 7-run inning in the seventh and added another in the eighth on a Texas error.
