Jin has strong showing at US Women’s Amateur

TULSA – Sam Houston golfer Grace Jin turned in a strong week at the 124th United States Women's Amateur last week at Southern Hills Country Club, qualifying for match play and advancing to the Round of 32. Â
A freshman for the Bearkats in 2023-24, Jin won the Texas Amateur earlier this summer to qualify for the USGA event and is the first Bearkat to take part in the event since Hanna Alberto in 2017. She turned in rounds of 71-74in the 36-hole stroke play session to tie for 16th and advance to the 64-player match play portion of the event.Â
She went into match play as the No. 17 seed and picked up a win in the opening round over Duke's Katie Li by a 4&3 margin. Li led 1UP at the turn before Jin tied it up at with a win at No. 10. After the players each parred the Par-3 11th, Jin won each of the next four holes to quickly close out the match with three left to play. Â
Jin then matched up with Florida's Maisie Filler, a second-team All-America selection and three-time All-SEC selection in the second round. The back-and-forth match saw Jin ahead 1UP after wins at Nos. 9 and 10, but Filler responded by winning three straight holes to take a 2UP advantage after 13. Â
The margin remained there until Jin birdied No. 17 to take the hole and cut Filler's lead to 1UP with one to play; however, that was as close it would get as each player parred the par-4 18th hole to give Filler a 1UP win.Â
Jin is coming off her first season with the Bearkats where she joined the squad at midyear and had a top-10 finish at the CUSA Championships, helping lead Sam Houston to a CUSA title. Â
