MONTGOMERY – Difficult playing conditions evened the playing field and Chattanooga took advantage, rallying back to clip the Sam Houston men's golf team by one shot on the final day of the Bentwater Intercollegiate presented by Huntsville Toyota on Tuesday.
The Bearkats entered the day with a 4-shot lead at –13 for the tournament, but inclement weather moved in overnight and loomed throughout the day, dampening course conditions and causing a delay late in the round. The Bearkats shot +12 as a team on the final day, the second-lowest score of the round; however, the Mocs roared past everyone with a round of +1 to finish at -2 for the week and take the crown.
UTC was led by the tournament's individual co-champions, Braedon Wear and Ethan Whitaker who shot 69 and 70 apiece. Whitaker's round was led off by an ace on his first hole of the day, the Par-3 fourth.
For the Kats, Alex Malanga showed little effect of the poor conditions, firing a round of 70 on the Par-71 Miller Course for his second straight under-par round of the week. He ended the event in third place at -3 for the event, one shot ahead of teammate Bret Gray who ended the week at -2 following a final round of 72.
Other scoring rounds for the Kats included Josh German's round of 76 and Hugo Trommetter's 78, while Ethan Dufresne also turned in a 78. German moved up a spot to 19th overall along with Dufresne at +5, while Trommetter landed in 15th at +4 for the week.
Gene Chaikangwal led three Kats competing as individuals, finishing in 12th overall after a final round of 76. Daniel Moon and Sebastian May each fired rounds of 75, finishing in 45th and 55th respectively.
Sam Houston will next head south to take part in the Border Olympics at Laredo CC beginning Monday, February 17.
